CHIO Aachen 2011 has now begun in the equestrian Mecca in Aachener Soers. The finest arena in the world is getting bigger and better year by year. Here is how it looked back in 1971 when my dad rode in the European Championships (the Swedish show jumping team consisted of Åke Hultberg, Gerhard Wilhelmsson and Marianne Leffler). In those days only the the main stand was covered. Today’s press centre and rider’s stand did not exist.
Happy Birthday to Åke Hultberg on his 61st birthday!
Swedish rider Åke Hultberg competed internationally, at the Olympics, the European and World Championships from the late 1960′s to the early 1990′s. Among his horses were Magnor, El-Vis, Carat and Heatwave.
Åke Hultberg (* November 29, 1949) on El-Vis (SWB 1962 by Cosmos x Ergo) was the only Swedish participant in the show jumping at the Olympic Games in Munich 1972. They finished at 17th place. Åke Hultberg was only 20 years old when he was 7th in the European Championships in Hickstead 1969. He won the Falsterbo Derby four times. His father Karl-Åke Hultberg was also an olympic rider (London 1948), and was chef d’equipe for Sweden in the 60′s and 70′s.
