Hugo Simon on Gladstone
Hugo Simon (* August 3 1942 in Křivá Voda near Šumperk, present-day Czech Republic) competed at six Olympics between 1972 and 1996. In Rotterdam 1980 he won the “Alternative Olympic Games” on Gladstone. He used to ride for West Germany, but facing difficulties to enter a very competitive German national team he switched to Austria before the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He won a silver medal with the Austrian team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona on Apricot D.
At the first ever World Cup final in Gothenburg 1979 he gained enormous popularity with the Swedish audience winning the WC title. Everybody loved his energetic style and the explosive jumping of his Gladstone. Hugo Simon became the first rider to win three career World Cup titles, in 1979 on Gladstone and also in 1997 and 1998 , both on E.T..
Since this blog is about riders of the past it’s actually too early to write about Hugo Simon. His career is far from over despite his 68 years. He is still competing successfully at high international level. In February 2010 he won the Grand Prix in Offenburg CSI2*, and only a few days ago he was second in the Grand Prix in Hannover CSI3*, both on Ukinda.
