The Irish equestrian legend Iris Kellett passed away. She died yesterday, Friday 11th of April 2011. Iris Kellett had enormous influence upon the success of Irish equestrian sport during the last 50 years. May she rest in peace.
Iris Kellett on Morning Light
Iris Kellett from Ireland has been in show jumping since the years following the Second World War. She broke into the then male dominated world of show jumping. At the age of 22, in 1948, she won the Dublin Grand Prix. The following year she won the Princess Elizabeth Cup at the White City, London, on Rusty. As a woman at that time she was still disqualified from competition in the Nations Cup. The crowning moment of her career came in 1969 when she, on Morning Light, won the European Championship for Ladies in Dublin in front of Anneli Drummond-Hay on Merely-a-Monarch and Alison Westwood on The Maverick. As a trainer she has manifested herself through her pupils Eddie Macken and Paul Darragh.
